History of the Craft Brew Club
Formally known as the Singapore HomeBrew Club
In Mid 2004, an enthusiastic group of home brewers came together and formed the 'Home Brew Club.' Their intention was to build a community around their love of beer and beer making. They held their first meeting at Brewerkz, the club's first sponsor. Meeting monthly to share beers, homebrew recipes, tips and tricks; the club grew to twenty-nine members.
In 2005, the club was officially recognized by the Singapore Registry of Societies. As an official club, the homebrew club quickly attracted a stable group of core sponsors, Paulaner, Archipelago, Pump Room, Red Dot, and Tawandang. That same year, the club embarked on the first international brewery visit, Length Dragon Brewery. The Batam trip soon became a club tradition, held annually. Additional trips were organized both locally and internationally. In the end, brewery visits became a core activity of the club.
2006 is considered a pivotal year for the Homebrew Club. The club expanded its focus beyond just brewing and into craft beer appreciation. Craft beer appreciation includes style education, beer history, tasting techniques (look, sniff, sip), draft pouring techniques, and the beer trade in general. The club continued to grow and tour more breweries abroad in Thailand and Vietnam, all the while the original monthly events locally in Singapore. Due to the continually increasing membership numbers and stable of sponsors, in 2008 the club added a second regular meeting every month.
By 2010, the the club had achieved the milestone of 100 active members. Growth continues and today we are at just over 200 active members and every month more and more beer enthusiasts join our ranks.
2015 has been amazing year for the club with our new key sponsor Paulaner Brauhaus and 270 active members.
We regularly have about fifty members attending a diverse range of events held every month. This year members have enjoyed Keg Parties at many of the great beer venues across Singapore, a Home Brew Showcase (with ten kegs of ten different styles) pouring at one of Singapore's premiere homebrew shops, as well as various beer / food pairing events, educational events, Brewery Tours, Beer appriciation classes and BJCP Classes. This year the Craft brew Club is proudly sponsoring the first BJCP Course to allow 15 of our members to sit for the Exam to become Certified Beer Judges.
The camaraderie among the members has propelled the club as a key pillar of the craft beer scene in Asia. Club members range from beer enthusiasts, home brewers, brewers, beer distributors, beer importers, and bar owners. The club is now truly interwoven into the fabric of what good beer in Asia is all about. It is our mission to educate the masses on the importance of quality. We are here to support the beer importers, distributors and our friends pouring the beers we love from behind the bars we visit.
